Description
The medication tamoxifen 20mg is based on chemicals. It functions by binding to estrogen receptors and blocking the effects of estrogen, a hormone that is specific to women, on breast tissue. This stops breast cancer cells from growing and multiplying.
Who should use tamoxifen?
People with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer may benefit from taking tamoxifen. The medication can reduce breast cancer risk in:
- individuals who have a high risk of developing breast cancer because of a family history of the disease or because their BRCA genes have changed.
- those who have already received a breast cancer diagnosis in order to avoid the cancer returning. This includes untreated breast cancer, breast cancer that develops in the opposite breast, and breast cancer that returns after radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery.
How long should you take tamoxifen?
Tamoxifen or other hormone therapy is typically used for at least five years, and occasionally for as long as ten. The details of your cancer diagnosis will determine how long your treatment will last.
Your healthcare provider may recommend taking tamoxifen for five years and then switching to different hormone therapy for several more years.
How Tamoxifen works
Tamoxifen is a drug that is based on hormones. It functions by attaching itself to estrogen receptors and preventing the natural female hormone estrogen from having an effect on breast tissue. As a result, breast cancer cells grow and multiply more slowly.
